More and more people and healthcare professionals are curious about psychedelics such as magic mushrooms (“paddo’s”) and psilocybin. Both have been scientifically studied for the effective treatment of emotional disbalance, brain fog, depression, bipolar depression, trauma, anxiety, addictions, substance use disorders, OCD, eating disorders, dementia, brain injury, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Yet there are important differences between whole magic mushrooms and the pure substance psilocybin.

In this article we explain the key differences between paddo’s and psilocybin and describe the main advantages and drawbacks of each form.

What Are Paddo’s (magic mushrooms)?

  • Paddo’s is the Dutch word for magic mushrooms (often called shrooms). These are special types of mushrooms that grow in nature and naturally contain the active substances psilocybin and psilocin.
  • The most well-known paddo’s are from the Psilocybe family, like Psilocybe cubensis, Psilocybe semilanceata, and others.
  • Besides psilocybin and psilocine, the mushrooms include other related compounds and nutrients. This mix may create a “fuller” experience, sometimes called the “entourage effect.”
  • People use paddo’s because they can cause changes in how you see, feel, and think. This is called a “trip.”
  • Paddo’s have been used for thousands of years in different cultures for spiritual and healing purposes.

What Is Psilocybin?

  • Psilocybin is is the main psychoactive molecule found in paddo’s (and also in so-called “magic truffles”).
  • When you eat paddo’s, your body turns psilocybin into another substance called psilocin. This affects the brain and causes the psychedelic effects.
  • Psilocybin is not a mushroom itself, but the main active ingredient inside certain mushrooms and truffles.
  • Pharmacokinetics: Psilocybin dissolves in water but passes slowly into the brain. Psilocine is fat-soluble and reaches the brain faster, causing its effects.

You can eat the mushrooms, or you can use pure psilocybin in special therapy settings, such as hosted by Conscious Pharmacist. Why is this difference important?

  • Dosage and Strength: The amount of psilocybin in paddo’s can change a lot, even between mushrooms of the same species. This means you might get a stronger or weaker effect than you expect.
  • Safety: With pure psilocybin (like in clinical studies), the dose is always the same. With paddo’s, it is harder to know exactly how much psilocybin you are taking.
  • Therapy: In professional therapy, sometimes pure psilocybin is used because it is easier to control the dose and effect.
  • Legal Status: In the Netherlands, selling and using paddo’s is illegal, but truffles (which also contain some psilocybin) are legal in smartshops. In other countries, the law can be different. In Portugal the controlled use of psilocybin is allowed, hence why we – at Conscious Pharmacist – host our psychedelic retreats and programs in the sunny Algarve (South of Portugal).

Entourage Effect

At Conscious Pharmacist, we grow and process our own psilocybin and mix it with other ingredients (such as cacoa, vitamin B3 and lions mane) to improve absorption and effectiveness, and to reduce potential side effects (such as bowel issues).

Scientific research in animals shows whole-mushroom extracts may boost brain plasticity more than pure psilocybin, suggesting extra compounds matter. This is similar to cannabis, where different ingredients influence the overall result.

Consistency and Dosing

  • Magic mushrooms: Natural differences in size, species and growing conditions lead to varying psilocybin levels. Exact dose is never fully certain and therefore could be risky to use.

  • Psilocybin: A purified powder or capsule always contains the same amount. This allows our healthcare professionals and certified therapists to work more precisely.

Effect Profile

Clinical studies show both mushrooms and pure psilocybin have similar length and strength of effects (usually 4 to 6 hours). Mushrooms may have a slightly longer “after-glow” because some compounds absorb more slowly.

How Are Paddo’s and Psilocybin Used?

  • Paddo’s are usually eaten fresh or dried. People use them for spiritual growth, therapy, or personal insight.
  • Psilocybin can be given as a pill or powder in a controlled setting, often during scientific studies or guided psychedelic therapy.

Risks and Safety

  • Both paddo’s and psilocybin are not physically addictive and have a low risk of serious health problems.
  • The main risks are a “bad trip,” anxiety, or confusion during the experience.

It is important to use these substances in a safe, professional environment with good support, such as provided by our Conscious Pharmacist team.
