A new scientific study has found promising results for the use of psilocybin (plant medicine), the active ingredient in magic mushrooms, as a treatment for depression and for Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). The scientific researchers found that high doses of psilocybin have similar effects to the antidepressant escitalopram, a widely used SSRI drug available under the brandnames Lexapro, Cipralex, Esertia, and Seroplex.
The new scientific study, published in professional scientific journal The BMJ, is a meta-analysis of 15 previous studies with a total of 811 participants receiving psychedelic drugs (not just psylocibine, but also LSD, ayahuasca and MDMA), and 5 studies with 1,968 participants receiving the antidepressant escitalopram. The mean age of the participants was 42 years, and 54 per cent of the participants in the studies were women.
Psilocybin as Effective as Antidepressants
Scientific research results from the scientific study show that most psychedelics perform better than placebos. This was measured using the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (a widely used scale to measure depressive symptoms). The scientific analysis showed that patients who took high doses of psilocybin in particular had fewer depressive symptoms than patients who were administered a placebo. The effect was similar to that of commonly used antidepressants, according to the study. Previous scientific studies have already shown that the psychoactive substance can be effective against symptoms of depression. However, this is the first time psilocybin was directly compared with a popular antidepressant.
Remarkably, none of the treatments were associated with more serious side effects than a placebo, such as hospitalisations or suicide attempts. This indicates that psilocybin may be a relatively safe option to treat depression.

What Does Previous Research show?
Psilocybin and other psychoactive substances have long been scientificcally studied in the fight against depression. Researchers at Imperial College London (England), for example, conducted a scientific study in 2017 in which psilocybin was administered to people with therapy-resistant depression. Subjects were given two doses of psilocybin: first 10 milligrams and then, a week later, 25 milligrams. Brain scans before and after treatment showed that psilocybin affected brain activity, with a decrease in blood flow in areas such as the amygdala, which are involved in emotional processing, stress and anxiety. Symptoms were also reduced several weeks after administration.
This naturally occurring psychoactive substance may also potentially help treat addictions. Last year, for example, a scientific study at the University of Cincinnati (USA) showed that psilocybin, combined with cognitive behavioural therapy, can be effective in smoking cessation. Participants in the study experienced a change in identity, no longer viewing themselves as smokers but as non-smokers. A significant percentage of participants remained smoke-free for long periods.
The advice is to start using magic mushrooms against depression or trauma only under the guidance of an experienced certified coach or medically trained therapist (such as Conscious Pharmacist), in connection with establishing the right dosage and safety (think about interactions with medication) and proper guidance when using psilocybin.

What Clinical Studies Show
Clinical research shows that psilocybin can be as effective as traditional antidepressants, and in some cases, even more effective.
- A major randomized trial found that psilocybin produced comparable or greater improvements in depression compared to standard SSRI treatment
- Participants often experienced improvements within days, rather than weeks
- Effects were still present weeks after treatment.
In addition, psilocybin appears to work differently:
- It increases brain connectivity
- It supports emotional processing
- It helps break rigid negative thinking patterns.
👉 This may explain why results can feel more profound and longer-lasting.

Psilocybin vs Antidepressants: What’s the Difference?
Antidepressants (like SSRIs):
- Are taken daily
- Often reduce symptoms
- Can cause emotional blunting.
Psilocybin works differently.
Instead of suppressing symptoms, it may help:
- Increase emotional awareness
- Reset negative thought patterns
- Create lasting psychological shifts.
👉 This is why many people experience it as a deeper form of change.

Evidence-based Benefits of Psilocybin
Based on recent scientific studies, psilocybin shows promising benefits for treating depression:
- Rapid and sustained improvement: Psilocybin can produce significant antidepressant effects that last up to a year after treatment.
- Effectiveness for treatment-resistant depression: It has shown positive results in patients who haven’t responded to conventional treatments.
- Long-lasting effects: Unlike standard antidepressants, psilocybin may provide enduring relief with only one or two treatments.
- Brain rewiring: Psilocybin fosters greater connections between different brain regions, potentially freeing patients from patterns of rumination and excessive self-focus.
- Large effect size: Scientific studies have shown a large effect favoring psilocybin over comparator treatments, with an overall Hedge’s g of 1.642.
- Reduction in depressive symptoms: Psilocybin treatment has led to significant decreases in depression severity, as measured by standard assessment tools.
- Potential for remission: Some studies have shown that depression can be completely eliminated in a portion of patients after psilocybin treatment(s).
- Few serious side effects: While some minor adverse events were reported, studies found no serious treatment-emergent adverse events.
- Potential alternative to conventional treatments: Psilocybin works differently from conventional antidepressants, making it a promising alternative approach.

Alternative Treatment
Depression remains one of the most complex and challenging mental disorders to treat. Despite the availability of various treatment methods, such as antidepressants and psychotherapy, many patients experience only partial relief or even no improvement in their symptoms. Millions of people, in some countries 8 to 15% percent, experience depression at some point in their lives. For them psilocybin based therapy might be an effective alternative!
