Exploring a Different Path for Depression, Anxiety and Mental Wellbeing
Are you taking antidepressants and wondering whether psilocybin could offer a different path? Or perhaps antidepressants have not given you the change you hoped for.
You may be experiencing side effects, feel emotionally numb, have tried several medications, or simply feel ready to explore something different.
A growing body of scientific research is investigating psilocybin-assisted therapy for depression and treatment-resistant depression, with promising and emerging research across anxiety, addiction, OCD, PTSD and trauma-related conditions.
At Conscious Pharmacist, we specialise in the place where these two worlds meet: Pharmacology + Psychedelic Care
Whether you are currently taking antidepressants, considering reducing medication, or looking for a different therapeutic approach, we help you explore your options through a personalised and professionally guided pathway.
Pharmacist-led • Personalised screening • International clients • Psilocybin retreats in Portugal • Long-term support
What If Antidepressants Are Not the Whole Answer?
Antidepressants can be valuable and sometimes essential. But they do not work equally well for everyone.
Some people continue to experience depression or anxiety despite treatment. Others struggle with side effects or feel that medication reduces symptoms without addressing the deeper patterns behind them.
And increasingly, people come to us because they are asking: Could psilocybin offer me another way forward?
Modern research aand many of our positive client cases suggests that, for some people, it may.
Psilocybin-assisted therapy is being studied as a very different therapeutic model: rather than taking medication every day, most clinical research uses one or a small number of carefully supported psychedelic experiences, combined with preparation and psychological support.
For us, the question is not: Antidepressants OR psilocybin?
It is: What is the most appropriate pathway for you?

Where Psilocybin Research Is Showing Potential
Scientific research into psilocybin has expanded rapidly.
Depression
This is currently one of the strongest areas of psilocybin research. Randomised controlled trials and meta-analyses have reported significant reductions in depressive symptoms, including research involving people with major depressive disorder and treatment-resistant depression.

Treatment-Resistant Depression
Psilocybin is being specifically investigated in people who have not responded sufficiently to conventional antidepressant treatments.
This is one of the areas that has generated significant scientific and clinical interest. And one of the key areas where our clients can potentially benefit from our psychedelic therapy.

A Different Approach — Not Simply Another Antidepressant
Psilocybin is not a natural SSRI. And it is not simply another medicine taken to suppress symptoms.
The psychedelic experience can temporarily change perception, emotional processing and patterns of thinking.
Researchers are exploring whether this period of increased psychological flexibility can help people:
- Step outside repetitive thought patterns
- Access and process difficult emotions
- See themselves and their lives from a different perspective
- Reduce rigid patterns of thinking
- Experience greater connection and meaning
- Create new behavioural and emotional patterns.
The psychedelic experience itself lasts hours. The work around it can continue for months. That is why our approach combines psilocybin with preparation, professional guidance, coaching and integration.

Already Taking Antidepressants? You Still Have Options!
Being on an antidepressant does not automatically mean that psychedelic care is impossible. But your medication matters.
SSRIs and SNRIs may alter the psychedelic response in some people, and different psychotropic medications have very different pharmacological profiles.
That is why we look at your medication before deciding on your pathway.
We consider:
- Which medication you take;
- Your current dose;
- How long you have taken it;
- Why it was originally prescribed;
- Other medication and supplements;
- Your current mental and physical health;
- Previous tapering experiences;
- Your goals with psilocybin.
Never stop antidepressant medication suddenly simply to participate in a psychedelic experience.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can psilocybin be an alternative to antidepressants?
Psilocybin-assisted therapy is being actively researched as a potential therapeutic approach for depression, including major and treatment-resistant depression. It is fundamentally different from taking a daily antidepressant and should not be viewed as a simple one-for-one replacement. Whether it is appropriate depends on the individual.
Does psilocybin work for depression?
Clinical trials, meta-analyses and numerous positive of our client cases have reported significant reductions in depressive symptoms following psilocybin-assisted therapy. Depression currently has one of the strongest evidence bases within modern psilocybin research.
Do SSRIs block psilocybin?
Not necessarily. Observational research suggests SSRIs can attenuate psilocybin effects in some people, while controlled research with short-term escitalopram pretreatment did not show a clear reduction in positive effects. Individual response can vary.
Can psilocybin cause serotonin syndrome with SSRIs?
Theoretical serotonergic concerns are often discussed, but the real-world evidence base for psilocybin-specific interactions remains limited. Risk assessment should consider the exact medication and any other serotonergic substances rather than assuming all combinations have the same risk.
Is psilocybin better than antidepressants?
Current research does not justify a universal claim that one is better. They are different therapeutic approaches. Direct comparison research, including psilocybin versus escitalopram, is helping scientists understand their relative effects.
Can I take psilocybin while taking an SSRI?
Possibly in some circumstances, but this requires individual assessment. Research suggests SSRIs may attenuate psychedelic effects in some people, while newer studies show the interaction is more complex than previously assumed.
Do I need to stop antidepressants before a psilocybin retreat?
Not automatically. Never stop antidepressants abruptly simply to take psilocybin. The medication, dose, duration of treatment, health history and withdrawal risk all need to be considered.
How long should I stop antidepressants before psilocybin?
There is no safe universal number of days that applies to every antidepressant. Half-life, dose, treatment duration, withdrawal risk and individual response differ considerably. Do not use a generic online washout period as a personal tapering plan.
Can I microdose while taking antidepressants?
Yes, often you can. However, this also requires individual assessment. Medication type, health history, goals and possible interaction or blunting effects should be reviewed first.
Can I join a retreat while taking medication?
Potentially, depending on the medication and your individual health profile. All clients should disclose medication during screening.
Can Conscious Pharmacist help me reduce antidepressants?
We offer a dedicated Psychotropic Medication Tapering Program for suitable clients. Where prescription changes or medical monitoring are required, these should be coordinated with the appropriate prescribing or healthcare professional.
What conditions is psilocybin being researched for?
Research is particularly developed for depression and treatment-resistant depression. Studies are also exploring anxiety, addiction, OCD, PTSD and trauma-related conditions, among others. The strength of evidence differs considerably between conditions.
What if I don’t know whether I need microdosing or a high-dose experience?
You do not need to decide beforehand. During the intake and discovery process, we look at your goals, health, medication, experience and preferences before discussing an appropriate pathway.
