Do you want to stop taking antidepressants or other psychotropic medication, but feel afraid of withdrawal, relapse or simply do not know where to begin? You are not alone. At Conscious Pharmacist, we help people from around the world gradually reduce their medication with a personalised tapering plan, professional coaching and ongoing support.
For many people, medication was once an important part of getting through a difficult period.
- Maybe it helped you through depression.
- Anxiety
- Trauma
- PTSD
- Burnout
- OCD
- ADHD
- Menopause
- Chronic pain
- Or a time when life simply became too much.
But perhaps months turned into years. And now something has changed.
You may feel ready to find out who you are without medication.
Perhaps you feel emotionally flat or disconnected. Perhaps you experience side effects. Perhaps you have tried to stop before and felt terrible.
Or perhaps you simply have a strong feeling: I don’t want to depend on this medication forever.
But then comes the fear.
- What if my depression comes back?
- What if I cannot sleep?
- What if I experience withdrawal?
- What if I become anxious again?
- What if I cannot do it?
We understand these fears. And this is exactly why we created the Conscious Pharmacist Medication Tapering Program.
You do not have to figure this out alone.

Wanting to Stop Medication Does Not Mean Medication Was a Mistake
This is important. We are not anti-medication.
As pharmacists, we know that antidepressants and other psychotropic medicines can be extremely valuable. For some people, they can even be lifesaving.
But something that helped you during one period of your life does not automatically need to remain part of your life forever.
- Your needs can change.
- You can change.
The question is not whether medication is “good” or “bad”. The better question is: What do you need now?
For some people, continuing medication is the right decision. For others, reducing or stopping medication becomes an important next step. When that moment comes, we believe you deserve proper support.

Why Can Stopping Antidepressants Be So Difficult?
One of the biggest misunderstandings about antidepressants is that you can simply lower the dose a few times and then stop. For some people this works. For others, it absolutely does not.
After taking medication for a longer period, your nervous system has adapted to its presence. So when the dose is reduced, your body and brain need time to adjust. If the change happens too quickly, withdrawal symptoms can appear.
These may include:
- anxiety
- dizziness
- headaches
- sleep problems
- irritability
- emotional sensitivity
- nausea
- mood changes
- restlessness
- unusual physical sensations
- “brain zaps”
- feeling unlike yourself
This can be frightening. And there is another problem: Withdrawal can sometimes feel very similar to the original condition.
Someone who experiences anxiety, sadness or poor sleep after reducing an antidepressant may immediately think: “My depression is coming back. I clearly still need the medication.”
But that is not always what is happening. Sometimes the nervous system is responding to the dose reduction. Understanding this difference can make an enormous emotional difference during tapering.

Why You Should Never Suddenly Stop Your Medication
If you are ready to come off antidepressants or other psychotropic medication, it can be tempting to simply stop; especially when you are motivated to start a new chapter. But your brain and nervous system may have adapted to the medication, particularly after long-term use.
Stopping too quickly can cause withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety, dizziness, insomnia, nausea, headaches, emotional instability and “brain zaps”. For some people these symptoms can be severe and may even be mistaken for the return of their original depression or anxiety. This is why we believe medication tapering should never be a race.
At Conscious Pharmacist, we create a personalised tapering plan and adjust the pace according to how you respond. The goal is not to reach zero as quickly as possible. The goal is to help you move through the process with confidence, stability and the right professional support around you.
Why “Just Stop Slowly” Is Not Always Enough
Modern tapering guidance has changed. We now understand much better that the final part of an antidepressant taper can sometimes be particularly sensitive.
Reducing from 40 mg to 30 mg is not necessarily biologically equivalent to reducing from 10 mg to 0 mg. This is why smaller reductions may become necessary as the dose gets lower.
This approach is often described as proportional or hyperbolic tapering. Instead of following one rigid schedule, the reductions become smaller as you progress.
For some people the journey takes a few months. For others it takes longer. There is no prize for finishing fastest.
The goal is to find the pace that works for YOU!
Our Medication Tapering Program Is Personal
At Conscious Pharmacist, we do not believe in giving everybody the same tapering schedule. You are not a standard protocol! So everything we do in our Psychotropic Medication Tapering Program is fully personalised, including intake, medication analyses, dosage, evidence-based tapering protocol, integration support and professional coaching.
Before we begin, we look at the complete picture.
- Which medication are you taking?
- What dose?
- How long have you been taking it?
- Why was it originally prescribed?
- Have you tried to stop before?
- What happened?
- How are you sleeping?
- How is your mental health now?
- What is happening in your life?
- What support do you have?
- What are you afraid of?
- And most importantly: What would you like your life to look like on the other side of this process?
From there, we build your healing journey.

The Conscious Pharmacist Approach
Our Medication Tapering Program combines several important elements.
1. Pharmaceutical Expertise
Medication tapering is not something we approach casually.
Conscious Pharmacist was founded by pharmacist and psychedelic therapist Sara Ahmadi MSc. This pharmaceutical background matters.
Different medicines have different half-lives, dose-response relationships, withdrawal profiles and interactions. For example: Sertraline is not venlafaxine. Duloxetine is not escitalopram. Mirtazapine is different again.
Your taper should reflect the medication and the person taking it.
2. A Personalised Tapering Plan
We create an evidence-based gradual tapering plan based on your medication history, current dose, response and personal situation.
The plan is not set in stone. Your body gives us information. If you are doing well, we can continue. If a reduction feels too difficult, we can slow down and further optimize.
Sometimes holding the dose for longer is exactly what the nervous system needs.
You do not have to fight your way through withdrawal to prove that you can stop.
3. Weekly Personal Coaching
Coming off medication is not only a pharmaceutical process. It can also be an emotional journey.
For years, your medication may have felt like a safety net.
Reducing it can bring up fear:
- Can I cope without it?
- Will I still be myself?
- What if everything comes back?
This is why our professional coaching and guidance is such an important part of our approach. During your regular sessions, we look at how you are feeling, what is changing and what you need.
We work on stress, emotional patterns, boundaries, sleep, lifestyle, nutrition, supplements, relationships, self-care, purpose, positive self-direction, and the beliefs that may come up during the process.
You are not simply reducing milligrams. YOU are building confidence in YOURSELF again!
4. Psilocybin Microdosing Support Where Appropriate
This is one of the areas that makes the Conscious Pharmacist approach different.
For suitable clients, psilocybin microdosing may become part of the wider tapering and coaching journey. We use it thoughtfully and individually.
The purpose is not to simply replace one substance with another. Microdosing psilocybin is used within a broader process of awareness, coaching and personal change. Clients may use this period to become more aware of their mood, emotions, triggers, habits and needs.
Importantly, the scientific evidence specifically for microdosing as an antidepressant-withdrawal treatment is still developing. We therefore do not pretend that psilocybin has been clinically proven to remove withdrawal symptoms.
Our confidence comes from combining what science currently tells us with our pharmaceutical expertise and our extensive practical experience supporting clients through personalised psychedelic and tapering programs.

5. Integration and Lifestyle Support
What happens outside the taper is just as important as the taper itself.
We therefore look at the foundations that help your mind and body feel stronger: sleep, movement, nutrition, stress, connection, time in nature, emotional regulation, routines, purpose and relationships. Small changes can become very powerful when they are repeated for weeks and months.
The aim is not simply: “How do we get the medication to zero?”
It is: “How do we help YOU feel well as you move forward?”

Why Slow Tapering Can Make Such a Difference
Current professional guidance increasingly recognises that antidepressants should usually be reduced in stages rather than stopped suddenly.
For people who experience withdrawal, reductions may need to become progressively smaller, especially towards the lower end of the dose. Research into hyperbolic tapering has also found that slower reductions are associated with less withdrawal.
This is something we strongly believe in: Your taper should adapt to YOU; you should not have to force yourself to adapt to a rigid taper.

“I’ve Tried to Stop Before and Couldn’t Do It”
We hear this regularly. And a previous difficult attempt does not automatically mean that you cannot live without your medication.
- Perhaps the taper was too fast.
- Perhaps the dose reductions were too large.
- Perhaps nobody explained what withdrawal could feel like.
- Perhaps you were going through too much stress at the time.
- Perhaps you had no emotional support.
- Or perhaps you became frightened by the symptoms and returned to your previous dose.
A difficult first attempt can leave people believing: “I can’t do this.”
We would rather ask: “What can we do differently this time?”
A Conscious Pharmacist Client Story
One of our clients, Vanessa, had been taking sertraline for depression for more than ten years. She wanted to stop, but she was afraid. Especially of falling back into depression.
With our personalised support and our Psychotropic Medication Tapering Program, she began a gradual personalised taper alongside microdosing therapy and integration coaching. She described the beginning as challenging, but having professional guidance gave her the confidence to continue. By her third month, something beautiful happened. After years of sometimes feeling emotionally flat, she began experiencing real moments of happiness again.
Her words say it better than we ever could: “Without her, I would never have dared to take this major step.”
And later: “That warm, real feeling I hadn’t felt in such a long time.”
For us, this is what medication tapering is ultimately about. Not simply reaching zero milligrams.
Feeling alive, connected and confident in yourself again.

Another Journey: From 12 Years of Antidepressants to a New Chapter
Another client came to us after taking antidepressants for more than 12 years. She described feeling numb, tired and disconnected; almost as if she were living on autopilot. She wanted something different, but stopping medication felt frightening.
We first guided her through our Psychotropic Medication Tapering Program. Step by step. With personal contact and support throughout the process. She later continued into psilocybin-assisted therapy and microdosing coaching.
Looking back, she described the whole journey as life-changing. What changed was not simply her medication. She described feeling softer, healthier, happier, more connected to her family and more alive. That is the bigger picture we care about.

Which Medications Can Be Tapered?
Although many of our clients come to us because they want to reduce or stop antidepressants, our Psychotropic Medication Tapering Program can also support people who want to come off other types of medication that affect the brain, mood, anxiety or sleep.
Depending on your personal situation, this may include:
SSRIs
- Sertraline / Zoloft
- Escitalopram / Lexapro
- Citalopram / Celexa
- Fluoxetine / Prozac
- Paroxetine / Paxil
SNRIs
- Venlafaxine / Effexor
- Duloxetine / Cymbalta
Other Antidepressants
- Mirtazapine / Remeron
- Bupropion / Wellbutrin
- Trazodone and others.
Every antidepressant medication is different, and every person’s history is different. That is why the first step is always to look at your specific situation.
Benzodiazepines
Such as:
- Diazepam (Valium)
- Lorazepam (Ativan)
- Alprazolam (Xanax)
- Clonazepam (Klonopin/Rivotril)
- Oxazepam
- Temazepam
Benzodiazepines can cause physical dependence, particularly after regular or long-term use. Stopping suddenly can cause significant withdrawal and, in some situations, can be dangerous. For this reason, benzodiazepine tapering normally requires a slow, carefully planned and individually adjusted reduction.

Sleeping Medication and Z-Drugs
Such as:
- Zopiclone
- Zolpidem (Ambien)
- Eszopiclone
Many people start sleeping medication during a stressful period and discover months or years later that stopping is much harder than expected. Our approach looks beyond simply reducing the tablet. We also work on the reasons behind the sleep difficulties, including stress, anxiety, nervous-system regulation, daily habits and sleep routines.
Gabapentinoids
Such as:
- Pregabalin (Lyrica)
- Gabapentin
These medicines are used for conditions including anxiety, neuropathic pain and other neurological symptoms. Withdrawal symptoms can occur when they are reduced too quickly, particularly after longer-term use. A gradual, personalised taper can help the body and nervous system adapt to each reduction.
Other Psychotropic Medication
In selected situations, we may also support people who want to explore reducing other psychiatric medications. This can include certain antipsychotic medications or mood stabilisers, but these require a different level of assessment because the risk of relapse can be significant for some conditions. In these situations, we assess suitability carefully and may work alongside your prescribing doctor or psychiatrist.
One Person. One Medication History. One Personal Plan.
There is no universal tapering schedule that works for everybody. Someone who has taken a benzodiazepine every day for ten years needs a very different approach from someone who has used a sleeping tablet for six months.
That is why we look at:
- the medication you are taking
- your current dose
- how long you have been taking it
- why it was originally prescribed
- other medications and supplements you use
- previous attempts to reduce or stop
- withdrawal symptoms you have experienced
- your physical and emotional wellbeing
- your sleep, stress and lifestyle
- and what you would like to achieve.
From there, we create a personalised tapering journey and adjust it according to how you respond.
The goal is never to get you off medication as quickly as possible. The goal is to help you move forward in a way your body, brain and nervous system can manage — while building the foundations that can support you beyond medication.
Can Psilocybin Microdosing Be Part of the Program?
For suitable clients, psilocybin microdosing can form part of the wider Conscious Pharmacist approach alongside medication tapering, personal coaching and integration.
However, this is always assessed individually. Different psychotropic medications have very different pharmacological profiles and interactions. Microdosing is therefore not automatically combined with every type of medication or every tapering journey.
This is where our combination of pharmaceutical knowledge, extensive experience with psilocybin-assisted therapy and personal coaching becomes particularly valuable.
Not Sure Whether Your Medication Is Suitable?
You do not need to work this out yourself.
We can then explore whether our Psychotropic Medication Tapering Program is suitable for you and what your next step could look like.
Can I Taper Antidepressants While Microdosing Psilocybin?
This is one of the questions we receive most often.
The answer is: Sometimes, yes; but it needs to be assessed individually. Because different antidepressants interact differently with the serotonin system, and some medications may reduce or change the effects of psilocybin.
There are also medications and medical situations where a psychedelic approach may not be appropriate. This is exactly why professional screening matters.
Please do not simply stop your medication because you want to start microdosing. There is a much better way to approach it.

What Are the Potential Benefits of Professionally Supported Medication Tapering?
When tapering is appropriate for the individual, potential benefits can go far beyond simply taking fewer tablets.
People may want to explore tapering because they hope to experience:
- fewer medication side effects
- greater emotional range
- more energy
- improved sexual wellbeing
- greater mental clarity
- feeling more connected with themselves
- less emotional numbness
- greater confidence in their own resilience
- freedom from medication they may no longer need
- the opportunity to explore other approaches to mental wellbeing
Not everybody experiences all of these changes. But for someone who has wanted to reduce medication for years, successfully doing so can feel enormously empowering.

What Makes Conscious Pharmacist Different?
There are many articles online telling you how to stop antidepressants. Information is useful. But information alone is not always enough.
We work with the person behind the prescription.
Our approach combines:
- Pharmaceutical knowledge: understanding medication, pharmacology, interactions and tapering.
- Psychedelic expertise: years of experience with psilocybin-assisted therapy and microdosing.
- Personal coaching: regular human support rather than sending you home with a schedule.
- Integration: helping you turn insights into real changes.
- Whole-person wellbeing: looking beyond symptoms to your sleep, stress, relationships, habits, body and life.
- Experience: we have supported many people from different countries through psychedelic therapy, microdosing and personal transformation.
You are not just another prescription. We truly want to understand YOUR story.
Our 16-Week Medication Tapering Program
Our Psychotropic Medication Tapering Program is €1,990 for 16 weeks.

Some tapering journeys can take longer than 16 weeks. This is especially possible after long-term medication use or when somebody is sensitive to dose reductions.
We do not rush this. YOUR wellbeing comes first!
Do I Need to Tell My Doctor?
We believe collaboration is valuable. So where appropriate, we can work alongside your doctor, psychiatrist or other treating professional. Your existing clinician can remain responsible for your primary medical care while Conscious Pharmacist provides specialised tapering, psychedelic and coaching support within our area of expertise.
Our goal is not to compete with your healthcare team. Our goal is to help YOU move forward.

Frequently Asked Questions About Tapering Off Antidepressants
What is antidepressant tapering?
Antidepressant tapering means gradually reducing your medication in steps rather than stopping suddenly. The size and timing of those reductions can be adapted according to the medication and how you respond.
Why shouldn’t I stop antidepressants suddenly?
Stopping suddenly can cause withdrawal symptoms such as dizziness, anxiety, sleep problems, mood changes, headaches and brain zaps. A gradual taper gives the body and nervous system more time to adjust.
How long does it take to taper off antidepressants?
There is no single answer. It depends on your medication, dose, length of use, previous experiences and how your body responds. Some people taper relatively quickly, while others need several months or longer.
What is hyperbolic tapering?
Hyperbolic tapering means making increasingly smaller dose reductions as the dose becomes lower. This reflects the fact that the relationship between antidepressant dose and its biological effect is not linear.
What is the difference between withdrawal and relapse?
Withdrawal is caused by reducing or stopping medication. Relapse means the original mental health condition is returning. Some symptoms can overlap, which is one reason why good monitoring and professional support are valuable during tapering.
Can I use psilocybin while tapering antidepressants?
For some people, carefully guided microdosing may form part of a wider tapering program, but this needs to be assessed individually. The research specifically on microdosing during antidepressant tapering remains limited, and medication interactions and personal health need to be considered.
Does microdosing prevent antidepressant withdrawal?
We cannot currently claim that psilocybin microdosing prevents withdrawal. Scientific evidence for this specific use is not yet strong enough. At Conscious Pharmacist, microdosing may be used as one part of a broader personalised program that includes tapering guidance, coaching, integration and lifestyle support.
Can Conscious Pharmacist help me taper sertraline?
We support clients using several antidepressants, including sertraline. Your current dose, duration of treatment, previous taper attempts, health and personal situation are reviewed before creating an individual plan.
Can Conscious Pharmacist help with venlafaxine or duloxetine withdrawal?
Venlafaxine and duloxetine can require particularly thoughtful tapering because withdrawal can be difficult for some people. We assess each situation individually rather than using one standard reduction schedule.
What does the Conscious Pharmacist Medication Tapering Program cost?
Our 16-week Psychotropic Medication Tapering Program is €1,990 and includes personalised tapering support, regular coaching and psilocybin microdosing support where appropriate.
Can you work together with my doctor?
Yes, most certainly. Where appropriate, Conscious Pharmacist can work alongside your existing doctor (GP), psychiatrist, or other healthcare professional so that your tapering journey forms part of your wider care.
How do I know if I am ready to stop my antidepressant?
You do not need to answer this alone. During a free introductory consultation, we can explore why you want to taper, your medication history, how stable you currently feel and what kind of support you may need.
Can I participate in the Psychotropic Medication Tapering Program from my home country?
Yes, you can. We will provide the medical intake, integration support and professional coaching via (video)calls. The personalised and evidence-based protocol dosage (custom made capsules) will be send to you by normal post or courrier. We ship to most countries around the world.
