What if low libido is not simply about sex? What if it is also about stress, emotional disconnection, body image, hormones, medication, relationships — and how safe and alive we feel in our own body?
Sexual wellbeing is an important part of being human. Yet for many people, it slowly disappears into the background. Work gets busy. Children need attention. Hormones change. Relationships become familiar. Stress takes over. Depression or anxiety enters the picture. Antidepressants may affect desire and sexual response. And somewhere along the way, you may realise: I don’t feel that part of myself anymore.
This is an area where psychedelic research is becoming surprisingly interesting. Recent studies and numerous of our client cases suggest that psychedelic experiences — including psilocybin therapy — may have positive effects on sexual pleasure, communication, body acceptance, intimacy and satisfaction with a partner.
Psilocybin is certainly not a new “libido drug”. The potential story is much deeper than that. It may help some people reconnect with themselves first. And sometimes intimacy begins there.
Sexual Health Is About Much More Than Libido
When people think about sexual health, they often think about one question: “Do I want sex or not?“
But sexuality is much richer than desire alone.
It can involve:
- Feeling comfortable in your body
- Being able to experience pleasure
- Feeling emotionally safe
- Attraction and desire
- Communicating what you want
- Allowing yourself to receive
- Confidence
- Vulnerability
- Connection with your partner
- Feeling feminine or masculine
- Body image
- Touch
- Playfulness
- Intimacy
- Feeling alive.
That is why low libido does not always have one simple cause.
Stress, exhaustion, depression, trauma, menopause, hormonal imbalance, overweight, relationship difficulties, poor body image and certain medications can all influence sexual wellbeing.
Sometimes the body is not saying: “I don’t want sex.”
It may be saying: “I don’t feel safe, relaxed, connected or present enough to want sex.”
That is a very different conversation.
What Does Psilocybin Have to Do With Sexuality?
Psilocybin changes the way we experience ourselves for several hours. But some of its most interesting effects may happen afterwards.
People often describe feeling more emotionally open, connected and aware of their body after meaningful psychedelic experiences.
- Some experience more self-compassion.
- Some become aware of emotional walls they did not realise they had built.
- Others suddenly see how stress, shame, past experiences or relationship patterns have affected their ability to be intimate.
This does not mean that psilocybin automatically improves someone’s sex life. But it may create an opportunity to explore what has been standing between you and your ability to feel, connect and receive.
And we now have research suggesting that these changes may extend into sexual wellbeing.

What Does the Research Say?
A fascinating study published in Scientific Reports in 2024 was the first modern quantitative research specifically examining psychedelics and sexual functioning. Scientific researchers looked at two different groups.
- The first included people using psychedelics in naturalistic settings.
- The second came from a controlled clinical study comparing psilocybin therapy with the antidepressant escitalopram in people with depression.
The findings were striking. Following psychedelic experiences, people reported improvements in several areas of sexual wellbeing, including:
- Sexual pleasure
- Communication during sex
- Satisfaction with their partner
- Satisfaction with their appearance
- Sexual openness
- Experiencing sexuality as more meaningful or spiritual.
In the controlled depression study, people receiving psilocybin reported positive changes in several aspects of sexual functioning, while the escitalopram group did not show the same overall pattern.
This does not mean that psilocybin has been proven as a treatment for low libido or sexual dysfunction. It does mean something important: Sexual wellbeing may be another area of life that can change after a meaningful psychedelic experience. And researchers are beginning to take that possibility seriously.

Psilocybin, Intimacy and Emotional Connection
Good sex is not only physical. For many people, emotional connection plays an enormous role.
- Can I be vulnerable?
- Can I tell my partner what I really need?
- Do I feel seen?
- Can I let somebody close?
- Do I trust them?
- Do I trust myself?
A 2025 systematic scientific review looked specifically at psychedelics and intimacy. Across controlled research settings, positive outcomes included connectedness, emotional disclosure, empathy, relationship satisfaction and affiliation. That fits with something we often see in our psychedelic work and therapies.
When people become more open towards themselves, they may also become more open towards the people they love. Sometimes this means feeling closer. Sometimes it means having conversations that have been avoided for years. And sometimes greater awareness also makes it clear that something within a relationship needs to change.
Psilocybin does not tell you that your relationship is good or bad. It may simply make it harder to ignore what you already feel.

What About Libido?
This is where we need to make an important distinction. There is currently not enough clinical research to say that psilocybin directly increases libido. And libido is influenced by many things.
- Hormones matter.
- Testosterone and oestrogen matter.
- Sleep matters.
- Medication matters.
- Physical health matters.
- Stress matters.
- Relationships matter.
But sexual desire is also deeply connected with the nervous system.
Imagine trying to feel sensual while your mind is thinking about twelve unfinished tasks, tomorrow’s meeting and whether you remembered to answer that email. Your body may physically be in bed. Your nervous system is still at work.
For people living with chronic stress, slowing down and reconnecting with the body can therefore be an important part of rediscovering desire. Psilocybin may potentially support this process through changes in emotional openness, psychological flexibility, body awareness and connectedness.
Rather than thinking: Psilocybin → higher libido, a more useful way to think about it may be: Psilocybin → greater awareness and connection → potential changes in intimacy and sexual wellbeing.
Stress, Burnout and Losing Desire
This deserves special attention.
We meet many people who are highly capable on the outside but completely exhausted inside.
They are working. Parenting. Planning. Organising. Solving problems. Looking after everybody. Their body is functioning. But there is very little space left for pleasure.
Sexual desire often needs something that modern life does not give us enough of: space.
- Space to feel.
- Space to play.
- Space to be touched.
- Space to stop thinking.
- Space to receive rather than constantly give.
If chronic stress is part of the problem, addressing sexual health without addressing the stress itself may miss an important part of the picture.
A psychedelic experience cannot remove all the responsibilities in your life. But it may help you recognise just how disconnected you have become from yourself, and what needs to change.
Our Psilocybin Microdosing Coaching Program often provides the ‘magic’ key to success.

Psilocybin, Antidepressants and Sexual Function
This is another important reason this topic deserves attention.
Sexual side effects can occur with commonly prescribed antidepressants, particularly SSRIs.
People may experience:
- Lower sexual desire
- Difficulty becoming aroused
- Reduced sensation
- Difficulty reaching orgasm
- Erectile difficulties
- Feeling emotionally or sexually “numb”.
For some people, these effects can have a significant impact on quality of life and relationships.
Interestingly, the clinical research comparing psilocybin therapy with escitalopram found a different pattern. Participants treated with psilocybin reported improvements in areas including partner satisfaction and sexual communication, while sexual dysfunction was reported more frequently as an adverse effect in the escitalopram group in the original depression trial. This makes sexual wellbeing a particularly interesting area for future psilocybin research.
But there is an important message here: Do not suddenly stop antidepressants because you want to try psilocybin therapy.
Antidepressant withdrawal can be difficult and, for some people, severe. If medication is affecting your sexual wellbeing and you are considering a different approach, medication changes should be carefully assessed and gradually supported.
At Conscious Pharmacist, our pharmaceutical background is an important part of how we approach these questions.

Women, Hormones, Menopause and Sexuality
For women, sexuality can change enormously throughout life.
- Pregnancy.
- Motherhood.
- Perimenopause.
- Menopause.
- Stress.
- Hormonal changes.
- Body changes.
- Relationship changes.
All can influence desire and intimacy.
During perimenopause and menopause, changes in oestrogen and testosterone can affect libido, vaginal comfort, sleep, mood and energy. At the same time, many women are carrying enormous mental loads. This means that sexual changes during midlife are rarely just one thing.
Psilocybin research specifically for menopause-related sexual dysfunction is still very limited. But its potential influence on mood, emotional openness, body acceptance, stress and connection makes this an interesting area for future research.
For some women, the deeper question may not simply be: “How can I get my libido back?”
It may be: “How can I reconnect with the woman I am now?”
That is a much more powerful starting point.

Body Image, Shame and Feeling Comfortable in Your Own Skin
It is difficult to surrender to intimacy when you are constantly judging your own body.
- My stomach looks different.
- I’ve gained weight.
- I’m getting older.
- I don’t feel attractive.
- What does my partner think of me?
These thoughts can pull us out of our body and straight back into our head.
The 2024 psychedelic sexual-functioning study found improvements in satisfaction with physical appearance after psychedelic experiences.
Other psychedelic research has also explored changes in self-compassion, acceptance and emotional openness. This could be especially relevant because sexuality requires something many people struggle with: being present rather than performing.
- Feeling rather than analysing.
- Receiving rather than judging.
- Being in your body rather than looking at your body from the outside.
Can Psilocybin Heal Sexual Trauma?
Sexual trauma deserves particular care.
Psilocybin can bring difficult memories and emotions to the surface. That may create opportunities for therapeutic processing, but it can also feel intense and overwhelming. However, it should never be assumed that a psychedelic experience will automatically “heal” sexual trauma.
For people with significant trauma histories, careful screening, preparation, boundaries and appropriate professional support are particularly important.
The goal should always be safety. Not pushing someone into an experience before they are ready.
What About Microdosing and Libido?
There are many personal reports of people experiencing changes in mood, connection, body awareness and sexuality while microdosing psilocybin. But the scientific research specifically examining microdosing for libido or sexual dysfunction is currently very limited. We therefore do not present microdosing as a proven libido treatment.
At Conscious Pharmacist, our Psilocybin Microdosing Coaching is much broader than simply taking capsules.
A three-month process can create space to explore:
- Stress
- Mood
- Emotional patterns
- Body awareness
- Relationships
- Boundaries
- Sleep
- Lifestyle
- Self-confidence
- Personal intentions
- Connection with yourself.
For somebody whose sexuality has become buried underneath stress, emotional disconnection or old patterns, this wider process may be particularly meaningful.
The goal is not: “Take a mushroom and want more sex.”
The goal is: Become more conscious of yourself — and see what changes from there.

Full-Dose Psilocybin and Deeper Reconnection
A full psychedelic experience is very different from microdosing.
Rather than making small changes over weeks or months, a guided high-dose experience can create a much deeper interruption of normal patterns. People may experience powerful emotions, memories, self-compassion, connection, insights and shifts in perspective.
For someone exploring intimacy, body image or disconnection, this can sometimes bring a very simple but powerful realisation: I want to feel again.
Or: I deserve to receive love.
Or: I have been disconnected from my body for years.
Or perhaps: I need to be more honest about what I want.
The insight itself is only the beginning. What you do with it afterwards is where integration becomes important.

Why Integration Matters
Imagine returning from a beautiful psychedelic experience feeling deeply connected to yourself.
Then Monday arrives.
- Emails.
- Children.
- Work.
- Laundry.
- Phones.
- Responsibilities.
- Old habits.
This is why psychedelic therapy is not simply about the psychedelic experience.
Integration means asking: How do I bring what I discovered into my real life?
Perhaps that means communicating differently with your partner.
- Creating stronger boundaries.
- Making more time for intimacy.
- Looking after your body.
- Working with a therapist.
- Reducing stress.
- Changing medication with appropriate professional guidance.
- Learning to receive.
- Or simply making space in your life for pleasure again.
Psilocybin may open the door.
Integration is how you walk through it.

Sexual Health Is Part of Whole-Person Health
At Conscious Pharmacist, we believe mental and physical wellbeing cannot always be separated into little boxes.
- Stress affects sleep.
- Sleep affects mood.
- Mood affects relationships.
- Relationships affect the nervous system.
- Hormones affect emotions.
- Medication can affect sexuality.
- Sexual wellbeing can affect confidence, connection and quality of life.
Everything is connected. That is why our approach to psilocybin is never simply about taking mushrooms.
We look at the whole person.
- Your health.
- Your medication.
- Your emotional wellbeing.
- Your lifestyle.
- Your relationships.
- Your intentions.
- And most importantly: What are you hoping to change?

Maybe It Is Not About Getting Your Old Libido Back
This is perhaps the most important message.
Sexuality changes throughout our lives. The goal does not always need to be to return to who you were at 25, before children, before menopause, before burnout or before life became complicated.
Perhaps there is another possibility.
- Meeting who you are now.
- Feeling comfortable in your body again.
- Allowing pleasure.
- Communicating more honestly.
- Feeling closer to your partner.
- Feeling closer to yourself.
- And remembering that sexuality is not something separate from your wellbeing.
It is part of being alive.
Psilocybin may not be a magic answer for sexual health. But emerging research and numerous of our positive client cases suggests that by helping people reconnect with their body, emotions, relationships and sense of self, psychedelics may open a fascinating new pathway towards intimacy and sexual wellbeing.
And sometimes reconnection is exactly where healing begins.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can psilocybin increase libido?
We do not yet have enough clinical evidence to say that psilocybin directly increases libido. Research does, however, suggest positive changes in sexual pleasure, communication, partner satisfaction and other aspects of sexual wellbeing after psychedelic experiences.
Can psilocybin improve sexual function?
Yes it can. A 2024 study found positive changes across several areas of sexual functioning following psychedelic use. In a controlled trial involving people with depression, psilocybin therapy was associated with positive changes in areas including partner satisfaction, sexual communication and pleasure.
Can psychedelics improve intimacy?
Potentially. A systematic review published in 2025 found positive intimacy-related outcomes across controlled psychedelic studies, including connectedness, empathy, emotional disclosure and relationship satisfaction. Not every experience is positive, however, and setting and support matter.
Can microdosing improve libido?
There is currently not enough controlled research to say that psilocybin microdosing improves libido. Our microdosing approach focuses more broadly on awareness, emotional wellbeing, stress, lifestyle, connection and personal growth.
Can antidepressants cause low libido?
Yes. Sexual dysfunction is a recognised side effect of several antidepressants, particularly SSRIs. Never abruptly stop antidepressants because of sexual side effects. Discuss medication changes with an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.
Can psilocybin help during menopause?
Yes it can. Psilocybin is being explored for several areas relevant to women’s wellbeing, but direct research into psilocybin for menopause-related sexual dysfunction remains limited. Changes in mood, stress, body acceptance and emotional connection may nevertheless make this an interesting future research area.

Can couples take psilocybin together?
Yes they can. A guided psilocybin experience can be a beautiful and powerful journey for couples. At Conscious Pharmacist, we have extensive experience guiding couples who want to deepen their connection, understand each other better, move through old relationship patterns and create more emotional and physical intimacy. Psilocybin can help both partners step outside familiar ways of thinking and relating. This can create space for greater openness, vulnerability, empathy, honesty and connection — qualities that can continue to grow during the integration period afterwards.
We offer private psilocybin experiences and retreats for couples, with professional preparation, personal guidance and integration support. The journey is always shaped around the couple, their intentions and what they would like to explore together.
